The leaders of the European Union countries at the summit in Brussels made a historic decision – economic sanctions against Russia were extended for the first time not for six months, as before, but for a year. This step indicates the strengthening of European unity and the intention to put long-term pressure on the Kremlin.

As reported by the European Council, the decision was supported by all 27 member states. Previously, sanctions decisions were often blocked due to the position of Viktor Orban, but this time the European Union demonstrated complete consolidation.

In addition, for the first time in over a year, the summit participants unanimously approved a joint declaration in support of Ukraine. The document confirmed the readiness to continue to provide Kyiv with political, financial, humanitarian, military and diplomatic assistance.

The statement also emphasizes the need to further increase pressure on Russia – by reducing its energy revenues, limiting the activities of the so-called shadow fleet and strengthening control over the banking system of the aggressor state.

Brussels has already called for the swift adoption of the 21st package of sanctions, which should further weaken the Russian military machine and make it more difficult to finance the war against Ukraine.
