US President Donald Trump has reacted sharply to the Senate’s approval of a war powers bill that would limit his right to independently continue military action against Iran without the consent of Congress.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump called the document “timeless and senseless,” saying that it only complicates his work at a time when negotiations with Tehran are approaching a potential peace settlement.
The day before, the US supported the resolution by 50 votes to 48. The document requires the president to withdraw US troops from the conflict with Iran unless Congress separately authorizes further military action.
This was the first time that such a war powers resolution received support in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Four Republicans joined the Democrats in voting, which was an unexpected political signal against the backdrop of the tense situation in the Middle East.
Commenting on the Senate’s decision, Trump said that Iran is now demonstrating a willingness to make concessions and negotiate.
“It is at this very moment when Iran is ready to give us everything and respects the United States that the Senate decides to hold this vote,” the American leader said.
At the same time, experts note that the resolution is largely symbolic in nature, since it does not require the president’s signature and does not create a direct legal obligation.
Against this background, Washington and Tehran continue negotiations on a peace agreement after the announced ceasefire.
