Ukraine is initiating all mechanisms provided for by international law to hold Russia accountable for the damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra during another massive attack on Kyiv. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga.

According to the head of the Foreign Ministry, the Russian strike caused significant damage to one of the most prominent spiritual and cultural symbols of Ukraine – the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and is under special international protection.

“By striking the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Putin forever inscribed his name on the list of the worst barbarians in history. Today we are dealing with Russian terrorists who have already surpassed ISIS in crimes against the cultural heritage of humanity,” Sybiga emphasized.

The Minister reported that Ukraine urgently appeals to UNESCO and other international institutions with a demand to provide an immediate and proper assessment of Russia’s actions, as well as to take specific response measures.

“We expect a decisive reaction from international institutions and capitals. No vague statements, silence or weak steps. Actions are necessary to stop Russian barbarity,” the head of Ukrainian diplomacy said.

As a reminder, as a result of the Russian Federation’s massive attack on Kyiv, a fire broke out on the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The Kyiv City Military Administration reported a direct hit and significant damage to the object.

The Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphany, called the attack on the shrine “another crime against humanity” and stressed the need for an international response to the destruction of Ukraine’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
