Ukraine received only 8 out of 32 points in the rating of protection of the rights of transgender people in Europe

Ukraine scored only 8 out of 32 possible points in the European rating of the protection of the rights of transgender people Trans Rights Index and Map 2026, which is published annually by the international organization Transgender Europe.

The rating assesses the legislation and state policy of countries in the areas of legal gender recognition, protection from discrimination, access to health services, family rights, combating hate crimes and providing asylum.

Ukraine received points in only two categories

According to the results of the study, Ukraine demonstrated the best indicator in the area of ​​legal gender recognition – 7 out of 14 possible points.

The country received another point for partial anti-discrimination protection in the field of employment.

At the same time, in the categories:

“Asylum”;

“Hate crimes and hate speech”;

“Health care”;

“Family rights”

Ukraine did not receive any points.

Ranking leaders and outsiders

The top places in the ranking were taken by Iceland, Malta and Spain, which have some of the most developed systems for protecting the rights of transgender people in Europe.

The lowest indicators were recorded in Russia, as well as in Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The authors of the index note that the rating does not reflect public attitudes, but rather the level of legislative protection and state guarantees for transgender people in each country.
